East Carolina University seeks an individual to oversee the development and management of the new Interdisciplinary Institute for Coastal Science and Policy (IICSP). The goal of this new Institute is to enhance understanding of the complex interactions between human behavior and the coastal/marine environments and to draw on this understanding to develop sound public policy. The Institute draws on faculty from five areas covering the natural and social sciences. A planned expansion will add at least three new faculty positions to further the Institute's goal of fostering an interdisciplinary environment focused on coastal issues.
To lead this new Institute, the University is seeking an individual with a broad understanding of coastal science and its relationship to public policy, skills in strategic and operational planning, knowledge of federal funding agency programs, experience with interdisciplinary programs, and an understanding of the role of outreach and communications in building the Institute's visibility. The successful candidate will have experience in the development and administration of multidisciplinary programs and excellent communication skills.
Specific duties and responsibilities of the Director will include:
Leadership and Program Development - develop and direct research programs; develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for securing external funding from government agencies, non-government organizations, the private sector, and from private donations; interact with relevant communities; lead and coordinate the hiring of selected ICSP scientist who will have joint appointments; recruit and mentor participating faculty;
Administration and Management - insure that the Institute is properly managed. Management responsibility includes issues related to personnel, budget, space, and equipment.
Agency Relations - develop and maintain effective working relationships with all agencies (federal, state, local) that either fund research on coastal and near-shore marine environments, or have management responsibilities for these environments.
Research - may undertake research in own area of expertise.
Outreach/Service - work with Institute staff to share research findings within the community; work with the community to identify emerging research issues; facilitate stakeholder discussions on research findings and research agendas; promote solutions derived from research to the broader social and political communities. The Director will serve as a liaison between coastal stakeholders and the research community.
East Carolina University is a member of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system with an enrollment of 23,164 students, of which 5,150 are pursuing graduate and professional degrees. It is located in a geographic region that is rich in estuaries, barrier islands, wetlands, and agricultural, fishery, and silvicultural resources. Greenville, North Carolina, a small city of some 65,000, is located 90 miles east of Raleigh, the state capitol. It is within easy driving distance of the Albemarle-Pamlico estuarine system, the state's extensive barrier islands (including the Outer Banks), and a full spectrum of pristine to highly developed coastal environments.
Minimum requirements for the position are a doctoral degree in a marine-related or relevant discipline, and established record of externally supported research and publications.
