Professional Background:

Dr. Shay specializes in the development and use of observational methods to study physical oceanographic phenomena. Past investigations have concentrated on turbulence and mixing at the air-sea boundary layer, in the upper ocean, and in lakes and lagoons. Current research involves analysis of the variability of the Gulf Stream downstream from Cape Hatteras, N.C. Dr. Shay is primarily interested in two classes of motions--large scale, slowly moving meander processes, and higher frequency fluctuations called near-inertial waves.

His research has been supported by grants from NSF and ONR. He is part of the Carolina Ocean Observations Laboratory (COOL) team.
