A. Dormitory Facility

1. Student accommodations - two rooms, 8 beds each (one room for female students, one for male). $7 per night per person.

2. Faculty accommodations - two rooms, one for two people and one for four (two bunk beds), plus commons room with TV, microwave and refrigerator. $25 per night for one room, $37 per night for two rooms.

To reserve dorm space and to obtain a dorm key, contact Adrian Whichard.  For issues concerning dormitory maintenance, contact Adrian Whichard.

B. Conference/ Classrooms

  • one seminar room (max. capacity 75)
  • two conference rooms (seat 12-15)
  • teaching laboratory

C. A/V and Computing

Available Equipment:

  • H.323 Polycom (H.323) videoconferencing unit with 42" wide format plasma monitor for video and voice conferencing
  • PC for remote application sharing,
  • Video monitor with VCR and DVD players
  • LCD projector with laptop (PC)
  • Voice and Web conference equipment
  • Wireless and Ethernet connectivity for UNC-CH computers
  • General-use computers and printers are available in our computer room.
We support a variety of teleconferencing options (voice and video).

D. Trucks & Vans

IMS has a fleet of trucks and vans for use in travel and field work.  For specifics on vehicle features and capabilities, click here.

In order to use a truck, you must:

  • be a UNC employee or student and have a NC driver's license.
  • be checked out by Claude Lewis
  • reserve the truck for the specific days you need it by signing your name on the truck reservation sheet or by contacting Adrian Whichard
  • sign it out on the truck sign-out sheet on the day you intend to use the truck

E. Boats

Available boats:


Trailered flat boats (inshore only):

  • 17' Jones Brother Bateau
  • 22' Jones Brother Bateau (2)
  • 24' Carolina Skiff

Trailered v-hull boats (inshore-deeper water and nearshore):

  • not available

    Please note that trailed boats are only available for use by UNC-CH researchers and classes. Trailered boat use will be charged at a rate of $31.50 per hour. Fuel usage and required personnel overtime for these boats will be charged at cost.

    In order to use an IMS boat you must:

    • have current CPR and First Aid certification.
    • take the U.S. Coast Guard Boating and Seaman Skills class
    • be checked out with Joe Purifoy

    F. Diving

    The UNC-CH Institute of Marine Sciences is an organizational member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) and abides by their standards. You can find the IMS Dive Manual here.
