R/V Capricorn

Available For Use In Research, Teaching, and Public Service

 

 

 

The R/V Capricorn - a newly renovated and equipped vessel available for use in coastal research, teaching, and public service. The vessel is a 1980 Defender Yacht that can accommodate up to 25 passengers and crew. The cabin provides space for laboratory instrumentation, as well as facilities for navigation, communication, and living aboard.

 

Specifications:

  • GM 60 series Detroit Deisel, 625 hp turbo charged
  • 8 Kw generator, Kohler, 110-240 ac
  • DC to AC Inverter
  • Hydraulic winch with "A" frame and new cables, lifting cap. 2000 lbs, 45-90 degrees
  • 16' wide and 48' long (LOA)
  • Draft: 4.5- 5 ft.
  • 250 gallon fuel tank
  • Reserve fuel tanks, hold up to 2600 gallons
  • Cruising speed: 18 mph
  • Top speed: 21.5 mph
  • Hydraulic trim tabs
  • 370 gallons fresh water
  • Furuno radar, 2-24 miles

Effective January 1, 2009, charges for the R/V Capricorn will be as follows: 

 

For UNC-Chapel Hill research and class users:

$100 per hour for weekday trips of up to 8 hours

$125 per hour for overtime (weekdays over 8 hours; Saturdays, holidays)

For non - UNC-Chapel Hill users:

$125 per hour for weekday trips of up to 8 hours

$150 per hour for overtime (weekdays over 8 hours; Saturdays, holidays)

IN ADDITION, ALL USERS WILL BE CHARGED AS FOLLOWS:

Preparation and clean up fee: $80
Capricorn fuel usage: at cost
Additional required personnel overtime: at cost
(2nd Mate as required by law and any additional personnel.)

There is a half day minimum for all uses

on the R/V Capricorn.

 

Estimates on fuel and personnel costs will be available on request.

 

The R/V Capricorn is not available on Sundays.
