Marine Sciences: Courses

A broad range of required and elective graduate coursework is offered through the Department of Marine Sciences and other related campus units. Approved courses also may be taken for credit at North Carolina State University, Duke University, North Carolina Central University, UNC-Charlotte and UNC-Greensboro through an inter-institutional arrangement. Advanced undergraduates minoring in marine sciences have access to most graduate level courses by permission of the instructor.

Two introductory survey classes (MASC 101 and MASC 401) are available to interested undergraduate students. Several others also have been designed with undergraduates in mind (e.g., MASC 450 and MASC 470). Most coursework is offered on main campus in Chapel Hill during the regular school year; however, some summer classes are offered in Chapel Hill and at the Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead City.
